people’s resources, livelihood and people’s assertion.

The People’s Forum on BRICS and Human Rights Law Network (HRLN-Goa), are jointly hosting an alternate to the Govt-sponsored BRICS summit.  They are organising an interactive seminar which will focus on people’s resources, livelihood and people’s assertion.
Place: Caritas Conference Hall, St. Inez, Panjim,
Date: Today, Friday, October 7
Time: 4 pm.
At this seminar, leading experts and activists will address people’s issues directly impacting livelihoods, including land ownership, fishing, mining, agriculture, forest rights and other traditional occupations Goans depend on.
The focus will be on inequitable distribution of people’s wealth and the haphazard and reckless development that is fast destroying people’s livelihoods in Goa. These are results of the 'corporatisation' of every aspect of Goan life and its resources.
In particular, the seminar will examine the draconian and 'above-the-law' IPB Act (Investment Promotion Board) that overrules all existing laws.
It will also look closely at IPB's impact on Goa’s environment and people’s livelihoods caused by unleashing of mega projects involving huge investments. Many of these projects will deprive and destroy Goans, their traditional occupations and livelihoods.
- Ms. Reboni Saha will speak on “Development Policies that are corporate-centric and not people focused.”
Mr. Ravindra Velip will speak on, “Cooperative mining and forest resources.”
Mr. Olencio Simoes, Secretary, National Fishermen’s Forum and leader of Goenchea Ramponkarancho Ekvot will talk on “Fishermen’s right to livelihood.” He will also narrate the impact of mega projects.
Mr. Rahul Basu of the Goa Foundation, will speak on “Goenchi Mati Movement,” to create a permanent mining fund so that all the profits of mining are ploughed back into a soverign fund to be utilised for the benefit of the people.
Ms. Judith Almeida, environment activist, will speak on the massive destruction of environment and reckless tree cutting on Colva-Varca road for the Govt-sponsored BRICS summit.
-Mr. Minguel Braganza, Secretary, Botanical Society of Goa will speak on the “Impact of BRICS policies on agriculture and livelihood.”
Freddy Fernandes of Orxitt Porjecho Avaz will speak on “Satellite Port in Betul and its impact on the livelihoods of people.”
Mr. Ramesh Gauns, mining activist, will update on the impact of renewal of mining licencees without any punitive action against the very mining companies that were involved in illegal mining.
Video Volunteers will screen videos on Goa’s environment and people’s struggle against destruction of environment, unplanned industrialisation and development of Goa.
