Political observers are of the view that the extent of inroads made by TMC candidate in Cuncolim will be in direct proportion to the loss sustained by Congress, as it's largely the traditional Congress votes that TMC will eat into besides, as Fernandes also holds personal appeal to voters across the cross-section of the society, the doctor-turned-activist-turned-politician could well upset the applecart of both Yuri and Dias









Rejected by the electorate in the last two elections in Cuncolim, former minister Joaquim Alemao has now fielded his son Yuri in the hope of carrying forward his political legacy

In Benaulim, his brother and former minister Churchill is contesting as TMC candidate while the latter's daughter Valanka is also trying her luck from Navelim, also on the West Bengal based party ticket.

All four Alemaos who had contested in the 2012 polls had met their waterloo Churchill (Congress) was defeated by BJP-backed independent candidate Avertano Furtado in Navelim, Joaquim (Congress) was trounced by BJP's Subhash 'Rajan' Naik in Cuncolim, Valanka (Congress) was defeated by CVP's Caetano Silva in Benaulim, and Yuri (NCP) lost to BJP's Subhash Phaldessai in Sanguem.


As much water has flown down the river Sal since their ignominious defeats, Yuri, too, has, since kept changing his hues. From NCP, Yuri hopped over to GFP and after a brief rendezvous with the regional outfit, switched over to Congress ahead of the polls

Though the Alemaos are trying to brush off the "outsider" tag that the rival parties are trying to stick to Yuri - Alemaos are from Varca in Benaulim constituency political observers say, the aamcho-bhailo narrative is likely to influence the poll outcome.

The Alemao camp, however, is confident of Yuri's victory as they believe the "development" ushered in Cuncolim by his father during his tenure would stand him in good stead.

Yuri is pitted against incumbent MLA Clafacio Dias who, in the 2017 polls, contesting as a Congress candidate, defeated Joaquim BJP's Subhash 'Rajan' Naik was pushed to the third slot

Dias, however, was among the 10 MLAs from Congress who switched over to BJP in July 2019. He has now been rewarded for his defection with a nomination

ENT Surgeon and social activist, Jorson Fernandes, former president of UGDP, quit his party four months ahead of the polls to contest as a TMC candidate.
