Ghoghea ghor of Panzorconi Cuncolim

Cuncolim, South Goa , India: People in Goa are quite familiar with heavy rains especially during the rainy season. When it rains heavily they use Ghogeani pavs (heavy rains) to describe the situation.

Can you describe the heavy rain situation and relate it with abundant riches which flow day in and day out of the coffers of a rich family in Goa.

Certainly, if you take the case of the Menezes family from Panzorconi Cuncolim who at one point of time one of the richest families in Cuncolim according to historical data available in the archives in possession of the family and also with families related to the Menezes family.

With cash and riches flowing in the Menezes house the locals chose to name it as Ghoghea ghor, the name which remains affixed to it till date. The riches and list of properties which the family possessed have reduced but the house retains the special grandeur.

Tucked away from the National Highway, around 500 metres to be precise situated in the mist of coconut trees and other fruit tress is the mansion of Menezes.

A compound wall dotted with carved stones greets you and as you enter a gallery with carved wood takes you to the house which has several antique furniture and among the collection in the house is the Grand Piano at the entrance, which was imported from Germany, which one of the daughters of the house used to play when she used to play when she lived in Panzorconi.

The Piano is also heavy that you need the services of four other people to move it and imported it from Germany during the Portuguese era is another story which will save for another day.

Like all the century old houses in Goa, the house has two water wells one in the Rozangon area and one more well at the back in the garden built to serve the rice mill and gardening purpose.

Francisco Menezes built biggest house in Panzorconi for his two sons -----Pideade and Antonio, who had one son Franklin Menezes, father of Athlee the only son of Antonio Jose Menezes among four sisters including two twin sisters.

Franklin Menezes, children Mrs Amy and late Servos Menezes owned the only commercial building in Panzorconi which were the only shops  and few meters away on opposite side there was a taverna called Gadhi.

Now the building stands demolished and serviced the community for many years. The ground plus structure also housed a school for some time, which imparted Portuguese lessons for students of the area of the nearby locality.

The school classes in Portuguese were conducted by Joaquim Coutinho of Madicotto Cuncolim.  The land was acquired by Govt in 1986 and now stands demolished for highway expansion. Franklin Menezes also built football ground at his own expenses at Charamodi opposite Kanknamodi for the villagers

Francisco Menezes house is known all over AVC as Ghoghea ghor. It is recorder that name Ghogho  was given as his wealth was flowing in the form of Ghogho rain water and was highly respected man,” says Attlee Menezes, the great grandson of Francisco Menezes.

The house have produced a few leading personalities, who excelled in sports, medicine, social service and business

Another leading light of Cuncolim,  Pideade Menezes was the pioneer in introducing Careiras (Caminhao in Portuguese) transport service from Cuncolim to Margao. He also started the only rice mill in Panzorconi at that time. A landlord, he had a hand in a few business enterprises in and around Cuncolim.

Piedade Menezes elder brother Antonio Jose Menezes was a chief steward on board the ship and founder member of Panzorconim seafarers club in Bombay and gave jobs to many villagers on board the ship.

Also when Panzorconi chapel (Our Lady of Piety) was built over a century ago the flooring was done at the expenses of Custodio Menezes and his wife Esperansa Menezes parents of Basilo and their names were engraved in marble on the main entrance floor of the chapel.

When chapel was renovated and the existing flooring of the chapel was done at the expenses of Attlee Menezes great grandson of Francisco Menezes ( Ghogho).

Attlee Menezes has also celebrated the chapel feast and also celebrated the feast of Cuncolim church Our Lady of Health.

He has also been a sportsmen and played volleyball representing Cuncolim Union in different volleyball tournaments.

Atlee’s brother, Servos who died in Paris was a good sports man and represented Chowgule College volleyball team and was captain of the team, he also played for Margao Azes and Borda Comba Volleyball club Margao and was awarded as the best Volleyball player in different tournaments throughout Goa.

Athlee’s mother, Melania Menezes wife of Franklin Menezes who was a nurse did a lot of community service. Also she was the head of Legiao de Maria of Panzorconim chapel and did lot of holy expeditions with her colleagues  from the village  to Old Goa n back by walking  n praying both ways in a single day.

At 98 she is the oldest member of the house and living a very religious lady praying for all the members of the family.

Francisco Menezes had a brother Custodio whose two sons Basilio and Dr Polly excelled in sports and Medicine.

Custodio house is also has the same pattern as that of Francisco but is much smaller. Both the houses are separately and has a well in the Rozangon. Footballer late Basilio Menezes (Tata Sports Club, Mumbai) hails from this house.

Dr Poly Menezes is another one, brother of Basilo he ran a successful practice in Bombay as doctor but later on migrated to US.

Cuncolim Hockey Club in association with Cuncolim Union will be starting their practice sessions from Sunday February 6 at the Cuncolim Union Basketball court, informed Glestone Fernandes

"Please note that we'll be starting Hockey at Cuncolim Union basketball court at Zupleshet on Sunday at 7am.  Please spread the word around, age no bar. Please bring along your sticks and if possible Hockey balls" said Glestsone in a message in Cuncolim hockey group which consists of hockey lovers, players and officials.

The Cuncolim hockey lovers are looking for some funding for some equipment which they will need in the form hockey sticks, balls, goalkeeper pads and markers.

“As of now we are in need of sticks and balls.. Many are interested to join but they do not have sticks and ball..  We'll also be requiring markers, goalkeeper pads etc..  But our major requirements are sticks and balls,” he added.

Hockey training sessions has stopped from 2018 and Sunday’s attempt is to bring the game back on the grounds by a few hockey lovers from Cuncolim.

Glestone is not new to hockey in Cuncolim he was the force behind Cuncolim Hockey Club. The boys and girls of Our Lady of Health High School and Maria Bambina Convent Cuncolim Convent trained on the tarred surface outside the Cuncolim Government School play ground for four years from 2014 to 2018.

Creative ideas take a new meaning at Café Bom Gosto

Cuncolim creativity takes to new heights !!!!!!!
A recent initiative in Cuncolim could be a precursor of similar initiatives around the state. Artist collective where creative individuals meet and discuss ideas and explore possibilities of working together and taking things forward.
One could see the birth of various ideas; artists were discussing thoughts that were springing in their mind. It was so motivating to watch all this. Everyone roas talking, everyone was thinking, it was intellectually stimulating. Shelton D'Mello, an actor
Creating art can be a singular obsession or a collaborative effort. Ideas discussed with friends can be part of the final presentation Academic studies on the transformative nature of the arts documents how community-based, collaborative arts initiatives enhance collective identity, build community, and address community problems. Art has that power. Recently in Cuncolim a very interesting development took place. Possibly for the first time in the state, a group of talented individuals came together to discuss ideas, the general state of affairs and find ways to move ahead.
Milroy Goes, film maker, was the man behind the idea. Called the Cuncolim Artists Circle, he invited artists of varying expertise to come together to exchange ideas and to refuel their energy. Milroy said the idea was to have intellectual conversation over coffee. Since Milroy is a filmmaker, there were a large number of people from that industry. It also attracted Varun Carvalho and Elvis Gomes. The evening was such that no one discussed politics but just focused on the arts. The initiative was personally very good for Milroy because a producer was desperate for people for an advertisement that needed to be shot. This initiative, he said, was just the start and he hoped more would spring up all over the state.
Varun Carvalho said the idea was very good and had to be replicated around the state. Art he said had to be nurtured in the state. Goa he said anyway attracted creative people from all over the world and incubators like this were a very good idea. He said he intended to set up a facility for reggae musicians to come stay and record albums. This would be open to musicians who played reggae from the rest of the country and the world. Goa, he said, was a good place to meet and discuss ideas and take projects forward. The general community he said was also very open to the idea of creative folk living in their midst.
GREAT MOVE: This artist collective could be

the start of a trend in Goa.
Siddhant Mehra, a film maker from New Jersey now based in Goa for a month, was also present. Normally one who writes scripts or peruses scripts written by others is here to write a story inspired by his life in India as well as in the states. He said he came across Milroy the first day he landed in Goa and stepped out to grab a bite. He said "Milroy talked about his creative ambitions and so did I that day. We got along very well and discussed creative ideas. I read his mind and suggested an artist's circle. He put it out in his network and people responded". He said it was a wonderful evening with
several filmmakers and musicians present. Siddhanth said "We were all doing stuff in isolation and the idea was to get together. Share our sorrows. It was a place where people could speak and people listened. We all liked that, we liked the fact that people were listening to what we were saying. It went on for several hours
Shelton D'Mello an actor who has starred in Marathi and Konkani films in addition to some Goa Agricultural Department short films felt it was an intellectually invigorating experience. He said "One could see the birth of various ideas, artists were discussing thoughts that were springing in
their mind. It was so motivating to watch all this. Everyone was talking, everyone was thinking, it was intellectually stimulating Everyone's struggle he said was different but when one heard it, it provided motivation because then people would realize it was happening with everyone.
This creative collective is a very good initiative and could help add more colour to the Goan landscape

Smell the coffee and have it with Cuncolim’s Goes brothers at Café Bom Gosto

Smell the coffee and have it with Cuncolim’s Goes brothers at Café Bom Gosto

In small towns like Cuncolim people generally prefer going to nearby cities whenever it comes to organizing meetings. Bom Gosto was a small effort from me and my brother to provide Cuncolimites a scope to gather their artistic and intellectual potential and discuss it all in one place.

Iconic Red Door, Mini Library & Fab Interiors, Café Bom Gosto, Cuncolim is the Perfect Coffee Place

Cuncolim, South Goa has just got a new foodie destination in Café Bom Gosto and is Cuncolim’s first premium coffee shop. It is founded by Goes Brothers, Rohan Goes and Milroy Goes, who are talented in their own fields!

Rohan is a GettyImages recognised travel photographer, World Photographic Cup Team Leader for India and has also authored a book, ‘How did I travel to China’. Milroy is a renowned filmmaker and has directed ‘Welcome Millions’ that represented India at the 91st Academy Awards (Oscars) 2019. Together these brothers own Buenos Muzik LLC in Wyoming, USA and Goa, India.

And this chic café is a product of their creative juices combined. The core theme of Café Bom Gosto, which means good taste in Portuguese, is coffee, music and books! This premium coffee shop has a grand entrance which is a fetching red British telephone door. Behind that door lies insanely cute interiors, a mini library, open piano and guitar.

Located in the heart of Cuncolim at MJ Residency, Voddy, this pretty café is very close to the Cuncolim Kadamba Bus Stand. Its interior colours are inspired by a blend of Jewish and Portuguese elements, and the walls are adorned with curated photographs clicked by Rohan.

The tagline of Café Bom Gosto is “Have an intellectual conversation over a coffee” and we have no doubts that the ambiance created here is all that and more! The coffee here is simply delicious and their USP. Along with scrummy burgers. You must also try their pastries such as Pastéis de Nata, Éclairs and Nutella Walnut Brownie. The location adds serene vibes, and you are always greeted with a smile here.

The need to open the café came from the fact that there are not many options to take business meetings in Cuncolim and Milroy had to travel all the way to Margao or North Goa for his film business meetings. So, the brothers came up with the idea to open a premium café right here in Cuncolim.

Like everyone, the pandemic hasn’t been easy for them either. With restrictions in place, they made the best possible use of social media (particularly Instagram), their website and WhatsApp groups to keep the Cuncolkars happy. The café has been doing good business, became mobile, started home deliveries within Cuncolim and even expanded their radius to Assolna, Velim and Chinchinim.

They don’t wish to stop at one, they have a vision to turn this brand into a franchise. And we surely see that happening!

One look at their Instagram feed and we are hungry! We simply cannot wait to head here, soak in the vibes and let the conversation flow over a cup of coffee and click tons of pics for the ‘gram. But till then, we are bringing home their best offerings by ordering in. Why don’t you do too?!

You can contact them over WhatsApp here.
