Hockey training session to start on Sunday at Cuncolim Union Sports Complex (Zuplea shet)

Cuncolim Hockey Club in association with Cuncolim Union will be starting their practice sessions from Sunday February 6 at the Cuncolim Union Basketball court, informed Glestone Fernandes

"Please note that we'll be starting Hockey at Cuncolim Union basketball court at Zupleshet on Sunday at 7am.  Please spread the word around, age no bar. Please bring along your sticks and if possible Hockey balls" said Glestsone in a message in Cuncolim hockey group which consists of hockey lovers, players and officials.

The Cuncolim hockey lovers are looking for some funding for some equipment which they will need in the form hockey sticks, balls, goalkeeper pads and markers.

“As of now we are in need of sticks and balls.. Many are interested to join but they do not have sticks and ball..  We'll also be requiring markers, goalkeeper pads etc..  But our major requirements are sticks and balls,” he added.

Hockey training sessions has stopped from 2018 and Sunday’s attempt is to bring the game back on the grounds by a few hockey lovers from Cuncolim.

Glestone is not new to hockey in Cuncolim he was the force behind Cuncolim Hockey Club. The boys and girls of Our Lady of Health High School and Maria Bambina Convent Cuncolim Convent trained on the tarred surface outside the Cuncolim Government School play ground for four years from 2014 to 2018.

Glestone has had accompanied the Goa hockey team as an official in the past and also had a firsthand knowledge of the talent and potential of the boys and girls he was training.

“All the boys and girls are eager to come back and play hockey, whenever I meet them they ask me, Sir, when are we going to start our hockey,” said Glestone.

The girls have since passed out from school and now are either in Higher Secondary are in College but are missing their hockey trainings,” added Glestone.

Glestone, a ex-Monte de Guirim, who shifted from Grade 8  to Mumbai, said Cuncolim Hockey Club did not receive any funding from the schools, Goans Hockey or Sports Authority of Goa or the Goa government.

“Cuncolim Hockey Club was all about funding from the local well wishers and some of own members pitching with a limited money. The girls and boys use to buy their own sticks while the rest of the equipment we did manage to get from the small donations we got my local well wishers,” said Glestone.
