  Cuncolim bamboo craft artisans carry on trade despite all odds Face scarcity of raw material and social stigma of being called Mhars but strive on The art of making baskets from bamboo and cane is dwindling in Goa. There are today just a handful of artisans in a few villages who mainly make baskets out of cane. Though there is a good market for these products, there are not many artisans or basket weavers in Goa. The Jadhavs and Manes at Cuncolim are among the select few who still make these baskets of cane and bamboo that are in huge demand by people for everyday functional purposes. Traditionally, the bamboo products are made by the Mhar community. But they face difficulties.  Norbert D'Silva from the football field in Cuncolim to priesthood..... a long journey It seems like it was just a few years and as they said time and tide wait for no man. yes many years back, a small child was playing on the football field and showed a lot of promise as he was training under coach Levino Dias and others coaches at Cuncolim in South Goa. Then a different call came calling it was a strong one which took him away from the sports arena to the Vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life. That’s for you Norbert D'Silva whom i saw as a child on the football field. A lot of water has since flowed down the River Sal till then, turn to the present and he is a Roman Catholic Priest. And it was a family funeral of Leslie Barreto that i had the privilege of listening to his sermon, the transformation from a shy and soft spoken teenager to a brilliant orator who made an impactfull and thoughtful message to the devotees at the Our Lady of Health church. That was in the late 80 and early 90’s a lot has changed in terms of the facilities at Chowgule College.   The ground were we played football, cricket hockey and also indulged in athletics events now hosts an artificial football surface, which was the first one in the state when it was installed in 2006. Now many artificial football surface of various shapes and sizes have surfaced in the state.
